Endodontic diagnosis is analogous to a jigsaw puzzle in that no single piece of information can be used to make a diagnosis. To develop a “probable” diagnosis, the endodontist must collect all of the relevant facts in a systematic manner. However, certain situations remain enigmatic, necessitating additions to the standard diagnostic procedures. Recent systematic reviews have confirmed that current approaches for determining the inflammatory condition of the pulp and periapical tissues are ineffective.
