Google employee No. 16 has headed up YouTube, the world’s largest video platform, since early 2014. In 2006, Wojcicki urged her bosses at Google to purchase the video site, which it did in a 1.65 billion dollar deal. In October 2015, YouTube launched a new subscription service called YouTube Red to compete with the likes of Netflix and Hulu. The Harvard MBA graduate, has helped boost revenues at Facebook 66-fold since becoming COO in 2008. In November 2015 Sandberg donated 31 million dollars in Facebook stock to a charitable fund, the majority of which will go to ‘Lean In’, her non-profit that supports women in the workplace as well as women’s empowerment groups.

In 2009, presidential campaigning led to equality reforms including maternity leave, flexible work schedules and job training. Female workers not working in the formal employment market and without an employment contract do not receive paid maternity leave. The National Women’s Service (SERNAM) is one of the state organisations charged with protecting women’s legal rights in the public sector. Yet women have embraced entrepreneurship as it allows them to reconcile work with caring for their families much better than they would be able to by working as employees.

The National Women’s Service (SERNAM) was founded in 1991 and is one of the organisations created by the state to draft executive bills concerning women’s rights. Another of the women’s rights organisations was Amanda Labarca’s ‘Ladies Reading Club’ that believed all women should be educated and have a more influentially productive role in society and politics, regardless of their socio-economic status. In the semis, after a tense and exciting match, Chile came out on top, beating Portugal on Penalties, 3–0 and hence they qualified for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Final. In their first ever final in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament, Chile faced Germany and lost 1–0. Re-elected in February 2016 to a second five-year term as head of the IMF, the organization that serves as economic advisor and safeguard for 188 countries, Lagarde is another in our list of powerful women involved in finance.

After two years as General Motors CEO Mary Barra has been appointed chair of General Motors. A 36-year veteran of the company, Barra has driven strong domestic sales, steady performance in Europe and new growth in China’s SUV and luxury markets after tough times for the corporation. Barra is now capitalizing on the company’s strong performance with innovations including the release of GM’s latest electric car, the Chevrolet xcritical EV across the US in 2017.

On 16 October 2008, Chile beat Argentina 1–0 for the first time in a qualifying competition, making history. Marcelo Bielsa was acclaimed for this accomplishment by both Chilean and Argentinian people. This match was seen as one of the reasons that ended Alfio Basile’s tenure as the Argentina coach.

Rojas was banned for life from the sport, although he eventually was pardoned in 2001. In the 2015 Copa América, Chile won their first game against Ecuador, with 2–0 being the score. Chile advanced to the knockout stage as Group A winners with 7 points and most goals scored of any team in the tournament (10). In the final, Chile defeated Argentina on penalties (4–1) after a 0–0 draw, to win their first Copa America title.

The flexibility with hours, using their skills and increased job satisfaction are benefits stated by many of the women entrepreneurs in Chile. In 2014 Botín became one of the most powerful banking executives in the world and the first woman to head the largest bank in the Eurozone. She stepped up to the position of executive chairman of financial-services for the Santander Group of Spain the day after her father Emilio Botín’s death from a heart attack, extending her family’s reign over Santander to four generations. Thanks to her efforts, the bank is the first to trial faster bitcoin-based money transfers, and has introduced innovative and more profitable checking schemes. In 2017 Botín must address economic risks in two of its biggest markets, Brazil and the UK.

In 1945, Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Other notable female authors from Chile include Isabel Allende, Marta Brunet and more.In 1999, Gladys Marín and Sara Larraín were the first women to be presidential candidates in Chile. The year before, Marín was the first person in Chile to charge Auxcritical Pinochet for crimes committed during his dictatorship. In the late 1940’s women’s issues were embraced by First Lady Rosa Markman de Gonzalez Videla, who encouraged women to work and participate in politics through various organisations.
